During the period 2006 and 2016, thirty-nine Nordic Educational Trust scholarships have been awarded to students from 12 of the state’s 14 counties, to support their pursuit of a two-year or certificate degree in technical education. The most frequently sought degree programs have been in health care and automotive sciences (31 percent each), followed by culinary and computer science (11 and 7 percent, respectively).
Each year the Roundtable collaborates with Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC), which markets the scholarship and administers the application process. In 2016 over 120 students applied for support and five scholarships were awarded. The average award in 2016 was $4,750.
The scholarship fund is stewarded by the VBR Research & Educational Foundation and was originally established by then-Roundtable member Ross Anderson and his wife, Gail in 1987. Upon the Anderson’s retirement in 2009, they reached out to the Roundtable to carry on the trust’s intention to support students for whom these awards would provide a life-altering opportunity.
A sincere Thank You to this year’s selection committee – Mark Crow, Lisaius Marketing; Geoff Glaspie, Husky Injection Molding; Bob Hamilton, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; Wendy Nunez, Champlain Investment Partners; Brian Otley, Green Mountain Power Corp.; Sister Janice Ryan, VBR Research & Education Foundation; John Wilking, Neville Companies; and Larry Williams, Redstone – for reading the applications and spending three evenings with us to help change the lives of several Vermonters.
If you would like to participate in next year’s selection committee, please contact the Roundtable office. Ask any committee member. While the engagement period is brief (3 – 4 meetings in April), the personal impact is big (huuuuge)!
