This time last year, I was retreating from the hum of work and life at picturesque Basin Harbor to embark on a nine-month journey led by Leadership Champlain, a community leadership program that operates under the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce. Nearing its 30th birthday, the program has graduated over 900 professionals, including many of you and your colleagues. In fact, about half of the Class of 2016 represented VBR member organizations. I will attest: there’s exceptional talent within your ranks!
For those less familiar with LC, the program is designed to offer insight into the many complex issues impacting our communities (government & politics, human services, corrections, education, energy, health care, economy) through active daylong learning sessions and team-based projects. LC participants meet and learn from key leaders to help piece together their understanding of how all the cogs work (or don’t) together, and how they may engage their own civic responsibilities to lead from where they are in their communities – from volunteering or serving on boards.
It was truly nine months well-spent. In addition to the program learning and networking, I walked away with a greater sense of self and value. If you have not done so before, I encourage you to encourage someone on your team to pursue Leadership Champlain or another program like it. Informed, engaged citizens help to ensure Vermont will continue to offer a high quality of life for generations to come.
